Flathead Trip
Our trail to the first camp takes us up and over the Continental Divide to the South Fork of the Flathead River. This ride is approximately 18 miles. We follow the South Fork of the Sun River from Benchmark, then up Hoadley Creek as we climb to the divide. Watch the change from lodge pole to sub alpine vegetation and then back again as the trail descends down Stadler Creek on the west side of the divide. The conclusion of the ride for that day includes juniper flats, aspen groves and the gracious meadowland of the South Fork of the Flathead. This is another fisherman’s dream trip. Fisherman who book this trip usually fish all day and skip the rides or some try to squeeze both day rides and fishing into their day. Some of the day rides are an easy 3 1/2 hour ride up Sentinel Mountain. There is an excellent view from the top looking south at the Danaher Meadows, east is the Continental Divide, north looks down the South Fork of the Flathead, and west is the magnificence of Woodtick and Jumbo Mountains. The open summit of Sentinel Mountain is strewn with shell fossils from the Mesozoic era. For the guest whom may choose to fish rather than go on the day ride, arrangements can be made to take you to some of the better fishing holes we know. You may choose to fish one or all layover days at this camp which ever you wish.
Take a Dramatic, 6-hour ride up Jumbo Mountain. The ridge that the ride follows up will show you a variety of systems, from mountain-meadow gardens to old-growth Douglas Fir forest. On top of Jumbo Mountain is a forest service fire look-out which provides a stunning view. Viewed by many neighboring ranges and into Canada and Idaho. We also frequently see mountain goats in the area. An easier layover ride is a 1 hour ride to Danaher Meadows. The Danaher Meadows consist of a great rolling grassland and slow moving river. For guests who choose to fish there are some excellent holes at this stop. For those who would rather ride more, the historic Danaher homestead is only 2 or 3 miles away. This trip can be a 4-7 day trip and the same route is taken when returning to Benchmark Trailhead.
